"Start-Up" Should Just Be Spelled "E-X-H-A-U-S-T-I-N-G!!"

If you've ever embarked on starting up a new business then you know exactly what I mean. From stealing moments from lunch or coffee breaks to write an email or send a fax to setting the alarm clock to call a manufacturer in a different time zone or giving up yet another weekend/evening...there never seems to be enough time to get everything you need to get done completed. Juggling 'real life' responsibilities with a new business venture can be very tricky, frustrating and overwhelming if you aren't careful.

Starting a business sometimes feels like it's in line with becoming a first time parent to me....not that I've done the latter but I feel like there is a lot of similarity. People don't seem to tell new mom's and dad's any of the 'bad' stuff....only the 'oh, it's the best thing you could ever do' stuff. This is such a disservice in my mind. How do you really prepare yourself for certain hurdles?

Over the past few months I've had some exeriences that I wish I'd planned for instead of having to learn from....while other experiences were pure opportunities. In the spirit of 'sharing is caring' I've made a list for my new business entrepreneur friends and welcome comments/input so that we can learn from each other and maybe even gets some sleep! =)

My Top Ten List.... (in no particular order):

  1. Plan ahead and be organized. Generally speaking, I'm pretty organized. Color coded and structured. I started out very organized....lots of cute notebooks with tabs marked for different categories so I could be on top of my game with info right at my finger tips. But I found as I got deeper and deeper into so many different facets of the business that I would start jotting things down on Post-Its or whatever I had handy and that was a disaster. Where did this piece of paper go? Where did I put that phone number? Take the time and stick to your organizational structure to avoid unnecessary stress. And if you have to jot stuff down quickly make it a pont to file it where it belongs for easy referencing later.
  2. Prioritize: Because there is only so much time in a day it's really important to start the day with your priorities in order. Shipping samples to a prospective buyer obviously has to come before working on your new letterhead design, for example. Time Management is key to being successful....especially when most new starts ups are a one or two man show and delegation isn't an option.
  3. Make lists!! Along the lines with being organized and setting your priorities for the day comes the "Action List"....so important! In order to not miss something important because you're juggling so many balls at once, creating that list keeps your head clear. And the satisfaction of checking something off that list is simply put-euphoric! The list gives you the ability to stay focused and prioritize.
  4. Just ask!! This is by far one of the most useful tools in a new business. Why? Because you just don't know what people will do for you or how they can help you unless you ask. People generally do want to help each other. I'm very big on picking people's brains and asking them how we can work together. Also, you don't know if your contact has a contact that has a contact that could be THE contact that will be the catalyst for your business to explode. Don't be shy, just ask!!
  5. PLAN!!! A business plan is the single most important tool for EVERY company. So many people tell me they don't have one and I can't wrap my brain around that. This should be a living, breathing document that you make a point to re-address annually. You're business plan should never be "to make money" because if it is, you're doomed. Your business plan should be your roadmap for how you plan to achieve success....your directions to get to a finish line. And that finish line should be a moving target because you want your business to flourish and keep growing...hence the breathing document that needs to be readdressed annually. If you don't have one, make this your next action item. There are some great business planning software companies out there if you are looking to save a few bucks while investing a little time to do it yourself or you can speak to your accountant/attorney for some help but normally this is billable by the hour.
  6. If you're going to source out work, ALWAYS check references. This was an important lesson for me. Just because you know someone personally or have mutual friends doesn't mean that they are the right fit for your business. And by the same token, just because they are inexpensive or give you a break doesn't mean they are the right fit either. Check out their work, check their references and always put your scope of work in writing. It will save you time, stress, aggravation and any future billing headaches if you're clear about your arrangement/expectations up front.
  7. NETWORK!! Where to even begin on this topic!! I'm a huge fan of networking!! Besides meeting some pretty fabulous people, networking becomes a plethora of real life education from people who've lived thru all different business experiences and want to talk about it. I participate in as many different networking groups as I possibly can. Some fit, some don't but unless I take a chance and go, I'll never know. From those groups I've been linked up with other people in other groups and we've basically built a community. If I need an insurance quote, I have a handful of agencies to choose from. If I need to dispose of office equipment or get plans drawn up for an extension to my office or plan an event, thru networking I now have options for who to turn to for a quote, references or advice. Or if someone else asks me for any of those things, I have some direction to share. That's invaluable.
  8. Pay it forward- I am a big believer in paying it forward. I always carry the business cards of the people that have become assets to my businesses. Yes, assets. My graphic design team, for example, is so talented and are always available to me. They are an invaluable asset to my business and are now part of our 'family.' If I drop my card somewhere, I also drop there's. If someone comments on how much they like my business card or my table banner, I have their card handy to give out as well. If I can help a deserving business owner get additional business, why not? I also have a section on my website for supporters and affiliates....this is specifically for the businesses or contacts that have gone above and beyond to support our efforts and it's my way of providing them a personal reference/free advertising. Always pay it forward because best case you'll get paid back.
  9. Follow through *sigh. I will never understand this. People who make a commitment to do something when they really don't have any intention of doing it. Why make the commitment then? I say if you make a commitment follow it thru. Even if you have regret about making the commitment, the fact that you followed thru will only help you build your reputation as someone who keeps their word versus being labeled the clown that blows smoke. If you really don't want to do something, don't make the commitment. And by the same token, circumstances change so if you do need to break a previously set expectation, do it gracefully and be thoughtful about it. You'll save face and won't ruin your rep.
  10. Do it for free when you can!! There are so many tools at the fingertips of young businesses thanks to the internet. From free social media advertising/marketing to free press release websites (I have a list of 50 sites that I use and will happily share) to webinar series hosted by successful business owners to help navigate the murky waters of entrepreneurship. Take advantage of these!! In fact, I will compile a list of my favorites for my next blog and share them with you.

At the end of the day, when you're collapsing into bed exhausted (or falling asleep with the laptop as seems to be the case for me,) you should be able to feel good about your accomplishments while looking forward to starting the day tomorrow....ready to learn new lessons.

Highlights from the 2010 Primetime Emmy-Endless Summer Event in Bev Hills, CA 8-24-10

First and foremost, we'd like to say thanks to Kathy Duliakis and Doris Bergman for producing such a great event.

Besides meeting some fabulous Hollywood hot shots we also made some great contacts as well as some very cool new friends.

We had so much FUN!!

When we arrived at the venue we met the 'cool' kids from Nitrocream, Rob & Ward...and could tell immediately that being stationed next to each other was going to make for a lot of laughs throughout the event. (And laugh we definitely did! These guys were a lot of fun.)

We picked our spot...(ok, I picked our spot....outside on the stone terrace surrounded by bamboo and flowing water...because The Shopper's Tote is 'green'...I thought it would be a nice subliminal message) and we started getting our station ready. Let's just say that there was no missing The Shopper's Tote!! Our brand stood out (possibly from space!) in chartreuse aka 'tote green.' Once we got our station set up, the celebrities started arriving....it was perfect timing!

The great Robert Townsend, actor-director-producer, was the first to come visit us and let me tell you he is such a sweatheart! He was our first celeb to agree to autograph The Shopper's Tote to be auctioned for our fundraising efforts for the Susan G. Komen of Greater NYC Race for the Cure, occuring during the month of October (for Breast Cancer Awareness Month)...auction details to come! He took some pictures and was a pleasure to speak with. Look for his new show, Diary of a Single Mom, coming out in September on http://pic.tv/

Some of the notables who came thru after Robert were.....Chord Overstreet (Glee)... Carrie Preston, Mariana Klaveno, Todd Lowe & Lauren Bowles (True Blood)... Daniele Nicolet (the Starter Wife...look for her new series on Lifetime this fall)... James Kyson Lee (Heroes)... Kathryn Joosten (Desperate Housewives)... Lenny Jacobson (Nurse Jackie)... Malese Jow (Vampire Diaries)... Omar Miller w/his fabulous mom and Eva LaRue (CSI Miami)... RJ Mitte (Breaking Bad)... Ali & Roberto (The Bachelorette)... Talk Show Host, Rolanda Watts... Chelsie Hightower (DWTS)... Drs. Andrew Ordon & Jim Sears (The Doctors)... Bokeem Woodbine (Saving Grace)...Hope Dworaczyk (Girls Next Door, 2010 Playmate of the Year) ...Kim Whitley...and many others.

Now...the celebs I really have to talk about!! =)

Antonio Sabato, Jr....... Holy smokes, this man is so hot that I broke out into a sweat just walking next to him! I swear I needed to sit down and collect myself! lol There's really nothing else to say....because I couldn't! Tongue tied and twisted up just being near him! hummina, hummina!

Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives)...Let's just say that she completely surprised me. She was not at all approachable and her interaction with us was pretty rude. Someone standing by actually suggested Page Six should be filled in on the exchange however that's not who we are. However, I would like to note that Felicity is more beautiful in person than the tv/screen could possibly convey. And what a body! I'm going to chalk up her behavior as perhaps just having a bad day because I'd hate to believe that she's like that all the time. Of course, she's an actress and should have been able to at least ACT polite and interested or she should have stayed home. just sayin.

Deidre Hall (Days of Our Lives)...she made us laugh. Our station ended up being in a spot that was ridiculously sunny (as noted above, I picked it and now I'm also sunburnt!) When she first came over the first thing she said was "So who'd you piss off to get stuck in the sun all day?"....haha Then I had to admit that I'm an idiot and picked the location for a subliminal message that was so subliminal no one else even got it! LOL

Shirley Jones!! Seriously, from the second I found out that Shirley Jones was coming to the event, I was excited and couldn't wait to meet her. She is the one I couldn't stop talking about before we arrived. And what a doll she is!! So warm and welcoming. She took pics, autographed Totes, shared stories...I just loved her! She even laughed when someone said her husband Marty Ingles has an uncanny resemblance to Reuben...she yelled "KINCAID????? HAHAHA!!" It was really funny. She gave warm hugs and was just such a doll. If I wasn't already a fan, I'd certainly become one after meeting her.

Diane Ladd....(made Oscar history with her daughter, Laura Dern, for being the first mother and daughter to get Academy Award nominations in the same year...to date no other mother-daughter team has held this honor)....Diane is another super sweetheart, so approachable and a completely down to earth/REAL woman. I actually met her in the bathroom (typical for me, LOL) where we spoke for a few minutes. When she finally made her way to our station she threw her hands up and yelled "Kathy, I have been looking for you everywhere!" (Imagine? haha She's been looking for ME?! That was pretty hysterical, to me!) Diane is very involved in cancer treatment research and works as a spokesperson promoting 714-X out of Canada. We spoke at length about breast cancer treatments...both standard and alternative methods and Diane shared very personal stories with me of her friends and family who have been afflicted by various forms of cancers. She also shared valuable information with me on complimentary cancer therapies as well as 714-X as an alternative treatment method. It was all very interesting. If you'd like information on how to find out more about 714-X or complimentary cancer therapies, Diane has provided me with details that I will share. send me an email (ksteuber@theshopperstote.com) and I'll pass along what I have.

Gregory Itzkin-President Logan from my #1 most favorite show ever...24!! Besides Shirley Jones, Gregory was the 'must see' celeb for me. And, yes, it's true...I did say..."President Logan, you are some kinda so-of-a-bitch!" haha He cracked up and responded..."every show needs a good son-of-a-bitch, right?" He was such a good guy! We didn't even have to ask him to autograph a tote, he just picked it up and started signing, saying he's very involved with SGK and is a huge supporter of cancer related fundraising. He was thrilled that we were giving back and allowing the celebrities the opportunity to participate in such a great cause. That was really special and we're thrilled that Gregory and the other celebrities were willing to help us in our efforts. Gregory's wife, Judie Gold, was with him and she shared with us her up and coming business...Grass Dogs. At Grass Dogs, they handmake a unique one-of-a-kind plush bed made of dense, high-quality foam, covered with 100% cotton fabrics with an embroidered application of your pet's photo. check them out at www.grassdogs.com We enjoyed spending time with both of Gregory and Judie!!

Carolyn Hennesy (Cougartown & General Hospital)...what a FUN woman!!! She had me cracking up from the second she came over to us and when she saw The Shopper's Tote she said "Now THIS!...I Love it! LOVE it! LOVE IT!!! and you can quote me on that!" Thanks Carolyn!! =)

Finally, the fab Eric Roberts, from the hottest movie out right now, Stallone's The Expendables (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1320253/ ) ...seriously....he was so FABULOUS!

Quote: "This is such a smart product! Everyone needs this! It's genius....genius!"

Eric has so much personality and was so genuinely happy to be there that his excitement was really contagious. Wherever he was, people were giggling and smiling and just overcome by his positivity. He signed so many totes that I had to cut him off! LOL He was so excited to be involved! And then...he kissed my cheek! LOL For a split second, I had a "Marcia Brady" moment! Then I washed my face. haha He shot some video signing the totes for our website and was just a great guy.

Overall, this was a pretty great experience and we're so thrilled to have been included. We're super excited to see what comes next!

Thanks again Kath & Doris!! xo

It's been really amazing reading all of the fantastic reviews on Jeanne Sager's article on CafeMom/TheStir and we're truly grateful for all of the support!!

Along those lines, we wanted to share two really fabulous emails we received this week....

From Bob in Laguna Hills, CA:

"I went to Walmart and then the grocery store today. When I came home, I pulled out a pair of The Shopper's Totes to bring in all the stuff. Man are those things AWESOME!! Wish I had someone here to take a picture for you....you would have been impressed! They were totally loaded up. Thought of doing arm curls with them...THANKS for such a great product!!"

From Tracy on Long Island, NY:

"I just had to write to you to share this remarkable experience!!

I went to King Kullen on Tuesday for my weekly family shopping trip. Between leaving the parking lot and arriving home to my apartment building, it began to torrentially down pour. I didn't know what I was going to do to keep from getting drenched. I felt the dread take over me! I have to go 300 yards between my parking space and the front door to my building...as well as up the 2 flights to walk up to get to my apartment.

Suddenly I remembered that I had my The Shopper's Totes in my purse! I was so excited when all 6 of my grocery bags AND my purse fit on one tote! I was able to carry my entire load in my right hand while holding my umbrella in my left! I couldn't believe it! I was able to get from my car to my door and up 2 flights of stairs ....and I was totally dry! Yes, it was certainly heavy to put everything on one tote but The Shopper's Tote didn't fail me! From my car to my apartment door while holding my umbrella....amazing!! What a spectacular product. You can bet I won't forget it's in my bag on my next trip...even if it's sunny! :) "

Thank you Bob and Tracy for taking the time to share your experiences!

What a scorcher the 4th weekend was in NY!

Hope everyone had a safe, happy and COOL 4th of July!! It was 107 degrees in NY this weekend...and wow is that just crazy HOT!

Here's a piece of The Shopper's Tote trivia.....TST is resistant to temperatures like NY sustained this weekend. The Shopper's Tote has a melting temp of 221 degrees F and 105 degress C...that means that you can feel confident that your TST will withstand crazy temps like this weekend and remain sturdy and durable while being at your beck and call!
